Empowering the Pivot: Strategic planning to maximize our prevention impacts

August 14 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

This workshop will invite participants to assess the impacts of their current prevention strategies, will discuss the barriers to change in our field, and will provide a framework to help participants plan the steps necessary for pivoting their prevention work to maximize their impact.

Workshop Agenda: Preventionists are compelled by our mission to prevent violence. In doing this work, we are often caught between the growing evidence base that tells us that focusing on determinants of health at the higher levels of the social ecology is a critical strategy for preventing violence, and the range of barriers that push us back to the individual and relationship levels. This workshop will engage participants in a discussion of the prevention landscape, a clear-eyed assessment of the impacts of our work, and strategic planning for how to pivot our work to be as impactful as possible. The session will include some lecture/information delivery and personal reflection and planning work, but will mostly rely on audience interaction to build shared wisdom.

Session outline:

• Theories of the problem—this interactive section will engage participants in an interactive discussion contrasting a traditional theory of the problem of violence that centers knowledge change and one that centers determinants of health related to violence prevention. We will discuss current events and map them onto the theory of the problem to get a sense of the current landscape of our work.

• Assessment—participants will reflect on their work and assess how it maps onto the theory of the problem. They will be asked to reflect on priority risk and protective factors in their communities. The presenters will use ICADV’s E4 Framework as a tool for strategy assessment.

• Barriers—participants will describe the barriers that disable higher-level SEM prevention strategies and fuel magical thinking in the field.

• Strategic planning—Participants will use a framework to plan for the steps that they will take to enable higher-level SEM prevention strategies in their practice.
