ICADV stands in solidarity with Uvalde, Texas

Indianapolis, Indiana, 5.25.2022 – Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Inc.

The Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV) stands in solidarity, grief and resolve with the families, classmates and community of Uvalde, Texas. We mourn the 19 students and 2 adults whose lives were lost at Robb Elementary School due to this senseless tragedy enacted by gun violence. We join those individuals, families, businesses, and communities that lack both words and understanding at this time. We call on American lawmakers to turn to action and enact meaningful gun violence legislation.

This tragedy represents the 30th shooting at a K – 12 school in 2022 and is the 2nd deadliest shooting at a school since the Sandy Hook massacre ten years ago. America is gaining a reputation where going to and teaching at schools are a risk factor for gun violence.

ICADV recognizes the fatal effects that gun violence can have on families and their communities. Since July 1, 2021, Indiana has had 72 domestic violence fatalities where 65 of them involved a firearm. Overall gun homicide in Indiana has increased 142% from 2011 to 2020 – compared to the nation’s 70% average. Enacting gun violence legislation is not only a positive step in the right direction, but it helps send a message that the government prioritizes the safety and lives of its people.

ICADV will continue to support firearm licensing and registration, removing firearms from those subject to protective orders or have a history of violence, and renewing the ban on automatic weapons. Only then will we begin to create communities where all of our lives are cherished, valued, supported and protected.
